Dating to at least the red-state, blue-state theme pushed by the mainstream media during the 90’s, the finger pointing blame game has become a staple of the nightly news. The recent idea floated to explain the loss of productivity being the latest example as it was put down to an ageing workforce. Once again play one group off against another. There have also been a number of op-eds of late blaming folks for not working hard enough, lacking education and or skills etc., for their failure to participate or share in the great globalization based economic times laid out before us. The latest op-ed by Harvard Economist Greg Mankiw in the New York Times essentially put down the public’s lack of appreciation to isolationist, nationalist, and ethnocentric belief systems. The fact that the economic and financial track record of so called pundits such as himself this millennium couldn’t get much worse doesn’t seem to matter.
